How can we count on our private health insurance companies when they consistently deny care to their policyholders? As Tom Bower points out, in the first half of 2009, they denied one in five claims for treatments recommended by doctors for their insured patients. Pacificare denied 40 percent of claims. Cigna denied 33 percent. HealthNet 30 percent. California OneCare would cover everybody all the time–no exceptions or exclusions.
