Can a TV Ad Campaign Change the History of Health Care?

Watch this PREVIEW SPOT

Then share it with 10 friends
and get them on board!

Check out this Sneak Preview of one of 365 TV Ads we plan to produce and distribute-one new spot every day for a year -- each  promoting the enactment of Senate Bill 810, single payer health care for Californians.

The campaign has been rescheduled to kick off in mid-February, 2010 as SB 810 legislation is reactivated. A new spot each day will run through California’s Election Day, November 2, 2010 and beyond. Ads will be distributed by email to millions of supporters and groups and run on broadcast media in selected cities in California.

We think you and your FRIENDS will agree that our 365 Ads will make history.

Along with Lily Tomlin, several Hollywood celebrities have already shot ads including Elliott Gould, Paula Poundstone, Ed Begley, Mary Kay Place, Laraine Newman, and David L. Lander. Even more are interested in participating--Sally Field, Ed Asner, Penny Marshall, Cindy Williams, Stephen Collins, Teri Garr, Kathy Najimy, Fred Willard, Sheila Kuehl and many others. Our goal is to finish 60 spots before February, and we need your help.

A $50 Donation puts your name on our TV AD PRODUCER LIST!

Most production services are being donated, but we must raise about $500 per spot to cover post production expenses for the first 60 spots. So, we’ve decided that any donor of $50 or more will be listed as a “365 TV Ad Producer” next to the name of the celebrity featured in the ad. The 365 TV Ad Producer List will be spotlighted on our website.

Also, $500 donors can have their name listed alone -- next to the name of the celebrity ad and $5,000 donors will be listed next to 10 celebrity ads. You can use the usual “DONOR” page on our website for safe, secure on-line donations or send a check to the address on this Donor page. The page will take convenient monthly donations, too.

Our single payer movement is growing every day with great people just like you!

Please share this spot with 10 friends, including potential major donors, won’t you? Strongly urge them to sign our petition on-line.

Finally, a profound “Thank You” to San Francisco Senator Mark Leno, our dynamic author of SB 810. We’re also excited to have such great allies as Lily Tomlin, the Entertainment Task Force for Single Payer, the Screen Actors Guild Foundation, and, of course, you.

With your help, we know WE WILL WIN!

  • Really nice post. Very Informative and helpful post.
  • Great post, I
  • The SB 810 campaign will be starting in Jan '10 because the Governor in June tabled all legislation with a potential fiscal impact to January so he could get a Budget passed. State activities have been minimized to avoid conflicts of meaning between state health insurance and national healthcare reform efforts. Stay tuned!

I attended the "Sneak Preview" of a few dozen 30-second video segments of celebrities speaking in support of single-payer in California. I was very glad to see how fresh, heart-felt, informative, and compelling virtually all of them were. One recommendation: please add a little identifying information about each speaker, not just their names, many of which were unfamiliar to me and others.

Hey Californians!!! What are you smokin over there??? Your state is bankrupt! You have no more money! You have lost all of the clout and pride that you once had! Your businesses are moving out in droves!! You can't afford any more entitlement programs! Maybe it makes more sense to move to Canada if you want free healthcare! I pray to God my state never looks like yours. Thank God I left when I did17 years ago. WAKE UP, you morons!!! Quit dragging America down the tubes.
  • In Canada, although public healthcare is nationally mandated, each province has and administers its own version of the program. I think state strategies for public healthcare in the US are a good way to proceed incrementally if you can't get a national public option, and I wish Californians the best of luck in getting it done.

Hi Don, Thanks for replying to my question. I am glad to hear that there are provisions. Would it be a strong tactic to publicize this info more? What think you?
  • Jan
Great ad with Lily Tomlin. We need more ads like that with a simple message that hits home. With humor if possible. I don't see a need for 365 different ads, though. Save money and recycle 180.

Since we don't kNow what kinD of watered down version of health care will by passed by congress (if at all) All of us Californians need to get behind Single Payer Legislation. We need a promotion like this to counter all the Healthcare industry/Republican lies and tell the real story about health care in our state.
  • Don
    Kathleen -
SB 810 has provisions and funding in it to retrain and help place those affected by the transition. It's a legitimate concern, but the legislation addresses it.

    HELLO! Dave,

Are you LISTENING? This is a campaign for SB 180 a CALIFORNIA Single-Payer health Care Plan... (SB-Senate Bills are STATE measures!!!!) NOTE: The first 3 sentences of the content above says, "promoting the enactment of Senate Bill 810, single payer health care for Californians."

The Town Halls and other media you've seen lately regard the NATIONAL health care proposals.

I hope you pay closer attention to your ballot than you did to that Spot...

I have a question about strategy with getting Single Payer passed. How can you offer an alternative for those that work in this industry and risk losing there jobs working for insurance companies? How could reassurance and a solution to their needs be factored in? This is an important factor when paradigm shifts in healthcare in the US.
  • Dave
Nice ad campaign, but why are you waiting until November 2009 to start airing them? The Healhcare Reform debate is going on NOW!
  • terri
Lets see if all the people that have insurance through there employer take the time to listen. They tend not to care till there unemployed, sick and unable to get a policy. Wake up Anerica!!
  • yankhadenuf
Ringy dingy for Single Payer...snort, lol ;-)
  • Brett
I saw Lily Tomlin perform an extended version of this routine several months ago. I would love to see a video of the entire routine; it was great and my immediate reaction was "I hope the Single-Payer advocates are in touch with Lily Tomlin, they need to use this!"
  • Phoebe Glass
I'd LOVE to see Lily Tomlin doing more of these ads for One Care. I watched this one four times in a row and laughed each time and said to myself, "It's true! It's true!" then wanted to send it out to everyone I knew. Just goes to show that funny can be VERY effective at making people sit up and take notice.
  • Jim Cooke
    Great !
And,I'm a member of the vanishing progressive Republican tribe.
  • J. Bock
The Ad is well done but the info at the end is too quick. Will most people take the time to look up California One Care to find out what it is? Single payer should be more prominent although many people don't even know what that means. Just my thoughts...
  • Lily Tomlin is great as Ernestine in the HMO Claims Dept. Very funny! Thanks! I added a link to it on AmericanHealthCareReform.org
